I remember being home one evening during the height of the pandemic, wondering how on earth Crisp would survive.
At first, my wife Jessica listened to me as I worried about not being able to go on shoots for clients, not being able to host workshops, not being able to grow — ultimately not being able to do all of the things we’d planned to do.
I kept saying “we can’t.”
But that’s when she stopped me and started listing out names.
Casey.
Jimmy.
Derek.
Zach.
Andy.
The names kept coming — and I knew exactly what she was doing.
Sean.
Josh.
Morgan.
Ken.
Jessica was listing the names of everyone who had ever slammed doors in my face, hung up on me, or told me they didn’t believe that I would ever be successful.
At that moment, I realized I was about to add myself to that list.
We’ve all heard that setbacks sort people. I thought that if that were true, then I wanted to be sorted into the right pile — the one that kept going.
Take a moment and think about three people in your life who didn’t believe in you, who doubted you, who put down your dreams.
Look at that list of three people…and add yourself if you’re ready to give up — if you don’t believe in yourself either.
Here’s a powerful lesson I want you to take away: You cannot fail if you don’t quit.
It’s impossible.
No one can say, “I told you so,” until you give up.
But the problem is that leaders often succumb to obstacles and ultimately accept that they’re doomed. They quit.
Next time you’re faced with a seemingly insurmountable problem, ask yourself what you need to do in order to turn it into one of the best things that’s ever happened to you and your law firm.
Don’t put your name on that list.
