Now more than ever, law firm owners have the opportunity to reflect, take stock, and put new initiatives in place to come out stronger on the other side. I recently sat down with Alvaro Arauz of 3a. Law Management to discuss the importance of making the most of this time.
Check out our full conversation here:
15 – Attention to processes. The last couple of years, you’ve seen this curve of people paying attention to processes, being more efficient, utilizing technology, working remotely, being paperless, and focusing on social media marketing. Now that this pandemic has forced the whole world to be in this situation, the people that weren’t on that bus are now realizing how critical it is to have those processes, to utilize technologies, and be marketing. The ones who already have these habits developed are finding innovative ways to keep crushing it.
31 – Style of operation. Do you operate out of fear or do you operate out of the potential? I naturally operate out of the potential. People that operate out of fear, out of emotion, were already doing it before, and this just exasperated the situation for them. They need to learn how to make logical decisions and not emotional decisions that are based on fear.
33 – Remind your clients. Now is a good time to remind your clients that you’re out there. You can’t go out to lunch, you can’t go to a conference — but there’s still social. You can still blog and do podcasts. I’ve seen a lot of people doing creative things out there. Keep that momentum of marketing an hour a day, but just find a way to adapt, to touch your referral sources on social and clients.
02 – No excuses. Right now is a good moment for everyone to reflect. It affects everybody all across the world, regardless of profession, regardless of wealth or status. Getting back down to your roots is what’s important. Now is the time to focus not only on yourself or your family but your business. When meetings and courts are canceled, now’s the time to work on your business. You have no excuse.
57 – Mistakes firm owners make. Mistakes that we see right now include losing key employees based on fear, not taking advantage of the downtime to streamline processes or automate new technology for your practice. I know it’s difficult — especially if you have kids — to juggle everything, but if you’re just putting your head in the sand like an ostrich, there are going to be other firms that are ready to take you over. That’s the thing. There are so many clients and firms in every practice area that are taking advantage of this situation.
31 – The right mindset. It’s a matter of perspective. If you’ve got the right mindset, it dictates your whole day. From waking up an hour earlier to having that time to get into the day, as opposed to snoozing five more minutes and rushing into everything.
15 – Work on your business. To the smaller firms: hang in there. Take advantage of this time to work on your business, your brand, your market — and figure out all the things you’ve been wanting to do. Go back to previous clients and ask for testimonials. There are things that you can always be doing to work on your business. If you’re using this as an excuse to say, “Oh, I don’t have to get up until 11 now, because my first meeting’s not until 11:30” — you’re just missing everything.
22 – Operate with the right mindset. Let’s go back to mindset. It all comes down to how you perceive things in your mind. Operate out of a place of potential, opportunity, and positivity — and give back to the community. It will come back to you. Try to help people through this. Have the right mindset, and I think that’s going to make you and everyone around you thrive.
